Plot Summary
In 2009, American geologist Adrian Helmsley visits astrophysicist Satnam Tsurutani in India and learns that a new type of neutrino from a solar flare is heating the Earth's core. He warns U.S. President Thomas Wilson that the crust of the earth is becoming unstable and that without proper preparations for saving a fraction of the world's population, the entire race is doomed. Meanwhile, writer Jackson Curtis is a chauffeur in Los Angeles for Russian billionaire Yuri Karpov. Jackson's former wife Kate and their children, Noah and Lilly, live with Kate's boyfriend, plastic surgeon and amateur pilot Gordon Silberman.
Jackson takes Noah and Lilly camping in Yellowstone National Park. When they find Yellowstone Lake dried up and fenced off by the U.S. Army, they are caught and brought to Adrian, who has become the chief science advisor to President Wilson. Adrian informs Jackson that they have discovered a massive neutrino absorption in Earth's mantle and that this will cause the crust to become unstable. He also reveals that they have secretly been building arks in China, which can accommodate only 400,000 people for humanity's continuity. Jackson rents a plane and rescues his family as the Yellowstone Caldera erupts.
As they fly to Las Vegas to find a larger plane, they see people gathering at an airport. They meet Yuri, his twin sons Alec and Oleg, his girlfriend Tamara and their pilot Sasha. They join them in Yuri's private plane as millions of people die in earthquakes and megatsunamis around the world. They escape Las Vegas as it is destroyed by an earthquake that causes most of California to sink into the Pacific Ocean.
They fly to China with the help of Charlie Frost, a conspiracy theorist radio host who correctly predicted the end of the world. Charlie tells them that he has a map to the arks, which are located at Cho Ming Valley in Tibet. He also reveals that he has not been chosen to board an ark and will stay at Yellowstone to broadcast live as long as possible. He gives Jackson his map before he dies in the eruption.
The group lands in Tibet, where they encounter Nima, a Buddhist monk who is evacuated with his grandparents. His brother Tenzin works at the ark project and helps them sneak into the arks with his family. They are caught by Captain Michaels, who is in charge of security for Ark 4. However, he lets them board after learning that they have tickets from Yuri.
Meanwhile, Adrian convinces President Wilson to make a public broadcast about the impending disaster and announce that only those with tickets will be allowed into the arks while billions will die. He also learns that Anheuser has usurped power from Wilson after learning that he will not board an ark himself. Anheuser orders that only people with tickets be allowed into the arks while those who stowed away be removed.
The ark's gate becomes jammed when some workers fall into it while being removed from Ark 4. This prevents it from being closed before a megatsunami hits as predicted by Adrian. Jackson and Noah free Tenzin's family from being trapped behind gears while Gordon sacrifices himself by diving into water to fix it; he is killed by the impact of the gears. Jackson and Noah manage to close the gate before the tsunami hits, saving everyone on board.
Adrian and Laura, a White House art expert and Adrian's love interest, rekindle their relationship. Jackson and Kate also get back together. Yuri dies when he gives up his seat to let Tamara and his sons board the ark. Sasha also dies when he flies the plane to a safe altitude for the group to escape in a Bentley Continental Flying Spur. The arks are launched as the floodwaters subside.
27 days later, the waters recede enough for the arks to set sail for the Cape of Good Hope, where they see a rainbow. Adrian learns that Dr. Helmsley's father, Harry, who was left behind with other residents in a retirement home in Florida, has also survived. He tells his son that he is proud of him and that he loves him before he dies peacefully.
Technical Details
The film was shot in 1080p high definition resolution using Sony CineAlta F35 cameras. The film was also converted to 3D for some theatrical releases. The film used extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create the scenes of destruction and the arks. The visual effects were done by several companies, including Digital Domain, Double Negative, Scanline VFX, Uncharted Territory, and Sony Pictures Imageworks.
The film's audio was encoded in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 for the Blu-ray release. The film features a dual audio track in English and Hindi languages. The Hindi dubbing was done by TBI Media Pvt Ltd, a Mumbai-based company that specializes in dubbing foreign films into Indian languages.
